Who’s Your Daddy?

Dad’s weight and diet linked to offspring’s risk of diabetes
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/10/101021103121.htm

Medical researchers have for the first time shown a link between a father’s weight and diet at the time of conception and an increased risk of diabetes in their offspring. The finding is the first in any species to show that paternal exposure to a high-fat diet initiates progression to metabolic disease in the next generation.

Weight Loss and PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)

Insulin sensitivity increases in patients with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) when they lose weight according to a study done in 2003.

Overweight women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who lose weight through either a high-protein or a high-carbohydrate diet experience improved metabolic, endocrine, and clinical parameters, according to the results of a clinical trial to be published in the February issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & MetabolismIt didn’t seem to matter what type of diet was followed, the weight loss improved overall conditions.

The cause of PCOS is not known, however, insulin resistance is a big factor that leads to other disease processes. There is no cure for PCOS. However, weight loss seem to be a leading treatment. PCOS is a common endocrine disorder in young women of reproductive age (4-12%) .Clinical signs are heterogenous and may include hirsutism, acne, obesity, menstrual dysfunction, infertility, and enlarged polycystic ovaries. Untreated, the disorder can lead to type II diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, emotional lability and cancer.

How Much and What Kind of Exercise Should I Do?

What is one of the most tiresome things to do when one has worked all day, tired, hungry and just wants to sit and vegetate? EXERCISE. But, exercising is important. We all know this. But, it can get boring and soon dropped if it is tedious right?

How much is needed? What kind of equipment? Is the gym necessary?

The truth is, one doesn’t need to spend hours in a gym. A brisk 30 min aerobic exercise routine is plenty. Walking, biking (stationary is fine), jump roping, treadmill, elliptical training is all excellent. The goal should be to do pulse exercising. Pulsing is a 60 -90 seconds of intense activity followed by a slower pace for 2-3 minutes. This revs up your metabolism.

Another great addition is 15-20 min of light weight or resistance training. Light weights and or exercising bands will suffice. No need for the heavy equipment for the gym. the weight/resistance training helps to shape and tone your muscles. Muscle development leads to increased metabolism. Muscle mass has a higher metabolic rate than other tissue.

Studies done at Harvard, Boston University and the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge have come up with some interesting findings.

‘New evidence is reinforcing the notion that the combination of strength training and aerobic activities such as walking is just what the doctor” should order.

Most people lose muscle mass at age 40 and continue to lose over the next few years. A Harvard University study showed that women gain an average of 20 pounds of over 16 years as the move into middle age. The study also showed that those who did aerobic exercise were less likely to gain so much.

John Jakicic, an exercise researcher at the University of Pittsburgh says that “you don’t have to the gym to strength train. It can be done at home using hand weights or resistance bands. Taking a risk walk daily and doing some weight training can provide benefits that will dramatically improve your health”.

Here are the upshots:

Strength training works well with aerobics

No long boring work outs needed

Can help to prevent the middle age spread

The combination of strength training and aerobic exercise will give the best results.

Good information folks….

Meridia recalled!

Hi gang, I know that it’s been a while. But this is important. One of the 2 drugs approved for long term weight loss has been recalled. “Abbott Laboratories has withdrawn its popular weight-loss drug Meridia because it increases the risk for heart attacks and strokes, the Food and Drug Administration announced Friday.” Meridia was approved by the FDA in 1997 along with Xenical. Meridia (sibutramine) caused non-fatal heart attacks, non-fatal strokes, the need for revival after cardiac arrest and death while only giving a modest amount of weight loss. Risks increased 16% for complications.

Here’s another diet pill that has been pulled. The only safe weight loss is that using natural medications. There is no magic pill. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, it will require some work and collaboration with a physician who is willing to go the distance with you.

If you are on this medication, stop taking it now.
