What is one of the most tiresome things to do when one has worked all day, tired, hungry and just wants to sit and vegetate? EXERCISE. But, exercising is important. We all know this. But, it can get boring and soon dropped if it is tedious right?
How much is needed? What kind of equipment? Is the gym necessary?
The truth is, one doesn’t need to spend hours in a gym. A brisk 30 min aerobic exercise routine is plenty. Walking, biking (stationary is fine), jump roping, treadmill, elliptical training is all excellent. The goal should be to do pulse exercising. Pulsing is a 60 -90 seconds of intense activity followed by a slower pace for 2-3 minutes. This revs up your metabolism.
Another great addition is 15-20 min of light weight or resistance training. Light weights and or exercising bands will suffice. No need for the heavy equipment for the gym. the weight/resistance training helps to shape and tone your muscles. Muscle development leads to increased metabolism. Muscle mass has a higher metabolic rate than other tissue.
Studies done at Harvard, Boston University and the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge have come up with some interesting findings.
‘New evidence is reinforcing the notion that the combination of strength training and aerobic activities such as walking is just what the doctor” should order.
Most people lose muscle mass at age 40 and continue to lose over the next few years. A Harvard University study showed that women gain an average of 20 pounds of over 16 years as the move into middle age. The study also showed that those who did aerobic exercise were less likely to gain so much.
John Jakicic, an exercise researcher at the University of Pittsburgh says that “you don’t have to the gym to strength train. It can be done at home using hand weights or resistance bands. Taking a risk walk daily and doing some weight training can provide benefits that will dramatically improve your health”.
Here are the upshots:
Strength training works well with aerobics
No long boring work outs needed
Can help to prevent the middle age spread
The combination of strength training and aerobic exercise will give the best results.
Good information folks….
